Learn About Diamonds

Every diamond is a unique product of time, place and change. The 5 Cs of Diamond Quality is a method of assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world.

Cut

Is the most important

The cut is the most important of the Cs because it has the greatest effect on a diamond’s beauty. When cut with the proper proportions, light is returned out of the top of the diamond, allowing it to really sparkle. If cut too shallow, light leaks out of the bottom, and if cut too deep, it escapes out of the side.

Colour

Is second best

Colour is the second most important C, as it’s what people notice after the sparkle. The colour of diamonds ranges from colourless to light yellow or light brown. Colourless diamonds are the rarest and therefore, the most sought after.

Clarity

Refers to inclusions

The clarity of a diamond is determined by the amount and location of imperfections, known as inclusions. The fewer and less visible the inclusions, the higher the clarity grade. These inclusions however are usually microscopic and don’t affect a diamond's beauty.

Carat

Is the diamond's total weight

Carat refers to the diamond’s weight, not its size. As the carat weight of a diamond increases, so does its rarity and therefore, its price. Consider cut and carat together when choosing a diamond, as a larger carat diamond with a poor cut grade can appear smaller than a smaller diamond with a higher cut grade.
